Historic Pollensa is situated in the hills, in the north of Mallorca, in the lee of the Tramuntana Mountains. It is a peaceful old town that has been largely unaffected by tourism. The town was established a few miles inland to protect against any sudden pirate attacks; its harbour, Puerto Pollensa, was left as an unprotected outpost. Some of Pollensa’s historic medieval centre remains around the Plaça Major, the main square, including the church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels. Other than the church, the main square houses a cluster of bars and cafés, and on Sunday morning, a busy market. Just north of the square is the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), a long stone stairway up the slope of El Calvario, bordered by ancient cypress trees. At the top of El Calvario, is a small chapel. On Good Friday, a figure of Jesus is slowly carried down the steps by torchlight in the Davallament (Lowering).
Les Murteretes is simply furnished in a local country style with cool tiled floors, beamed ceilings and white walls. The entrance is into an open-plan living / dining room that has a Satellite TV, DVD, CD and a feature fireplace. Doors open onto the terrace that runs beside the house and around towards the BBQ area. The kitchen opens off the living area and is well equipped with a gas hob and oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Also on the ground floor there is a separate sitting area and an air-conditioned twin bedroom with a separate shower room. There is a open wrought iron staircase to the first floor where there are two further air-conditioned bedrooms, one double and one twin, with beamed ceilings and attractive wooden or cast iron bedsteads which share a full bathroom. Both bedrooms have views over the gardens and pool area.
The outdoor areas are a feature of Les Murteretes with a choice of dining areas including a pergola overlooking the swimming pool and covered terrace at the side of the villa. A summer kitchen with built in barbecue, sink and gas ring complete the facilities for al fresco dining. The 10 x 5 m L-shaped swimming pool has roman steps and a cascade water feature and is set beside the villa amongst lawns dotted with palm trees and colourful beds of flowers and shrubs.
